To minimise its reliance on outside suppliers, in early 2024 Leonardo took the decision to invest in a tube bending machine that was geared to low volume, high-accuracy production; a machine that would give the aerospace company the ability to produce the exact parts it required, precisely when it required them.
“In terms of pipe and tube manipulation, the volumes we need are typically so small and specialised, they are not necessarily a key priority for external suppliers.” said Shane Lovett, Technical Support Service Manager – IMOS at Leonardo.
Shane said: “Although I had previous experience of a Unison EvBend 1000 during my time supporting Apache helicopters at RAF Wattisham and was aware of the machine’s strengths, we needed to look at the wider tube bending machinery market before making
a purchasing decision. Ultimately, we chose the EvBend for its quality and ease of use.”
After defining the exact requirement, including bespoke tooling, Leonardo placed an order in autumn 2024.
“Everything went extremely smoothly during both the FAT and installation,” continues Shane Lovett. “Full operator training was also provided, during which a member of our technical support team benefitted from gaining a thorough understanding of what would be needed in terms of ongoing technical and material support.”
“The level of service we have received from Unison has been excellent,” concludes Lovett.
“Thoroughly understanding our requirement, they have assisted us through every stage of the purchase, including the manufacture and supply of specialist tooling and the thorough training of our on-site team at RNAS Culdrose. In fact, it’s fair to say that nothing has been too much trouble.”
